What Is a Stablecoin?

A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value — typically pegged 1:1 to the US dollar — combining the speed and programmability of blockchain with the reliability of traditional money.

How Stablecoins Work

Fiat-backed stablecoins hold reserves of fiat currency or equivalent liquid assets in regulated accounts. Each token is redeemable for one dollar, providing a straightforward stability model backed by real-world assets.

This model enables near-instant global payments, 24/7 settlement, and programmable money — capabilities that traditional banking infrastructure cannot easily provide.

Fiat-Backed Stablecoins

Fiat-backed stablecoins are the most widely used type. Examples include SBC, USDC, and USDT. Each token is backed by reserves of fiat currency (typically US dollars) held in regulated bank accounts or equivalent instruments. They're simple to understand and provide the strongest price guarantees — each token is redeemable 1:1 for the underlying fiat currency.

Use Cases

Stablecoins have grown from a niche trading tool into critical infrastructure for global finance:

  • Cross-border payments & remittances — near-instant, low-fee transfers anywhere in the world.
  • DeFi & trading — the base currency for decentralized exchanges, lending, and yield protocols.
  • Merchant payments — accept payments without volatility risk, with instant settlement.
  • Payroll & treasury — pay global teams and manage corporate treasuries onchain.
  • Agentic commerce — AI agents use stablecoins (especially via protocols like x402) to pay for services autonomously.

SBC: Built for Payments

SBC is a fiat-backed stablecoin issued by The Stable Coin Company, redeemable 1:1 for USD. It's deployed on 12+ blockchains with audited, US-compliant smart contracts and automated reserve management via Brale. SBC's ecosystem includes gasless payment tools, account abstraction, and agent payment rails — making it purpose-built for modern payment applications.

Regulation

Stablecoin regulation is evolving globally. In the US, issuers are subject to state money transmitter laws, FinCEN requirements, and emerging federal legislation. SBC's smart contracts automatically comply with US Sanctions and BSA requirements. Third-party attestations ensure reserves are maintained transparently.

Agentic Commerce

As AI agents become autonomous economic participants, stablecoins provide the programmable payment rails they need. SBC's Agent Payments Platform and x402 protocol support enable agents to pay for APIs, services, and resources independently — a rapidly growing frontier called agentic commerce.
